Medium: Charcoal on Paper
Signature: Unsigned
Provenance: Acquired from the Artist's Daughter; Private Collection

Description
A striking study in line and form, Artist and Easel reveals Barbara Warren’s masterful command of draughtsmanship and spatial composition. Executed in charcoal on paper, the work captures a moment of artistic creation, where the figure of the painter is poised mid-motion in front of a canvas, tools in hand. The scene is constructed with rhythmic contours and dynamic structure, suggesting both physical energy and reflective stillness. The abstracted, modernist approach echoes Warren’s sensitivity to gesture and her focus on the artist's world. Though unsigned, the drawing is an evocative example of Warren’s exploration of the creative process, presented here in a refined contemporary frame.

Biography
Barbara Warren was an influential Irish artist known for her thoughtful, often introspective works that explored the human figure, domestic interiors, and the practice of art itself. Born in Dublin in 1925, she studied at the National College of Art and Design before furthering her education in Florence and Paris. Warren's work is marked by a quiet lyricism, whether rendered in oil, pastel, or charcoal. She exhibited widely throughout her career and was elected a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1989. Deeply respected as both a painter and educator, Warren contributed significantly to the Irish art scene over several decades. Her work is held in public and private collections across Ireland, admired for its subtle strength and considered composition.
