Description
A superb genre painting by Erskine Nicol, The Letter exemplifies the artist’s finely honed ability to blend narrative charm with technical mastery. Executed in oil on canvas, the scene depicts a contented figure seated in a dimly lit interior, absorbed in reading a letter while smoking a pipe. The details — from the glint of light on the ink bottle to the casually strewn papers and books — reflect Nicol’s meticulous observation and warmth of characterisation. The setting is rendered with tonal richness and a subdued palette that enhances the atmosphere of quiet intimacy. Signed bottom right and titled on a label verso, the work is housed in an elaborate period-style carved frame.

Biography
Erskine Nicol RSA ARA (1825-1904) was a Scottish painter best known for his genre scenes that captured the everyday lives of 19th-century Irish people with both humour and humanity. Born in Leith, near Edinburgh, Nicol moved to Dublin in the mid-1840s, where he taught art and developed a keen eye for the social and cultural life around him. It was during this time that his distinctive narrative style began to take shape—marked by anecdotal compositions, lively characters, and subtle wit.

Nicol's paintings often depicted rural Irish communities, portraying peasants, tradespeople, and emigrants with warmth and finely observed detail. While many of his early works embraced lighthearted themes, his later pieces revealed a more reflective tone, particularly in his portrayals of emigration and hardship, underscoring his growing empathy for his subjects.

He gained recognition on both sides of the Irish Sea, becoming a member of the Royal Scottish Academy and an Associate of the Royal Academy in London. His finely executed oils and watercolours remain valued for their narrative richness and technical precision, offering a vivid glimpse into the social fabric of 19th-century Ireland. Nicol also left a lasting artistic legacy, influencing future genre painters, including his son, John Watson Nicol.
