Description
This deft pencil drawing captures a distinguished gentleman seated in quiet contemplation. Biography
John Butler Yeats RHA (1839-1922) was one of Ireland's finest portrait artists, famed for capturing the intellectuals of the Irish Literary Revival. Originally trained as a barrister, he turned to art in his late twenties and studied in London, where he absorbed Pre-Raphaelite influences. Over a long career, Yeats became revered for his insightful oil portraits and lively sketches of prominent figures, including his son, the poet W.B. Yeats, and many leading cultural personalities of the day. His style is marked by a delicate realism and an ability to convey the character of his sitters with economical pencil and charcoal lines. Yeats's contribution to Irish art is significant - he not only documented the faces of a generation but also inspired future portraitists through his blend of technical skill and empathetic observation.
