Description
In Lost Cities Shaded Passage, Michael Hales constructs a layered abstract environment that invites contemplation and interpretation. Executed in encaustic and oil on board, the composition is defined by a grid of textured planes in muted greys, icy blues, deep charcoal, and a central burst of red, evoking both architectural structure and archaeological memory. The work's encaustic surface reveals subtle topographies and embedded gestures, suggesting urban traces, eroded walls, or the vestiges of forgotten spaces. Monogrammed by the artist, the piece exemplifies Hales’ command of material and spatial tension, combining painterly nuance with a restrained modernist geometry.

Biography
Michael Hales is a contemporary Irish artist working at the boundary of abstraction and landscape. Trained at Limerick School of Art and Design, he is known for his use of encaustic—a wax-based technique that allows for rich surface layering and gestural excavation. Hales' practice often engages with built and natural environments, drawing on memory, architecture, and mapped terrain. His works are characterised by a disciplined structure underpinned by expressive materiality. Based in Ireland, he continues to exhibit selectively and is represented in private and corporate collections across Europe.
