Description
Wild Horses captures Simon Coleman's early talent in full motion, depicting a dynamic group of horses in a sunlit yellow field. The loose, expressive line work is paired with a fresh, lyrical use of colour. The composition suggests vitality and energy, characteristic of Coleman’s lifelong engagement with the Irish landscape and rural scenes. Painted in 1937, this early piece already shows the artist's eye for movement and compositional rhythm.

Biography
Simon Coleman was a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy and a key figure in 20th-century Irish representational painting. Born in Dublin, he studied at the National College of Art and developed a fondness for Irish country life, horses, and rural labour, which remained central subjects throughout his career. His works blend observation with a subtle lyricism, particularly evident in his watercolours. Beyond the studio, Coleman was closely associated with literary and artistic circles in mid-century Dublin, including the clientele of Grogan's Pub, where several of his works were acquired and displayed for decades.
